Hwang In-kie - Digital Landscape Built Pixel by Pixel
This overwhelming landscape recalls traditional painting while evoking completely new sensations. Hwang In-kie's "digital landscape painting" is built entirely by hand where tradition meets technology.
He pixelates landscape images on computer, then manually attaches materials like Lego blocks, crystals, and beads to each pixel position. "Old Wind" consists of massive 9-meter Lego landscape and automotive hood piece reproducing scenery.
The automotive hood work uses thousands of small dots instead of brushstrokes. Though appearing digital, it's completely handmade. The Lego landscape is more amazing—from distance you see mountains and streams, but approaching reveals landscape created through thousands of blocks.
His materials—sparkling crystals, matte silicon, fine beads—have different temporalities and textures, creating spiritual landscape projecting human memory and philosophy.
Distance makes overall landscape clearer; approaching makes material properties strongly felt—unique visual experience examining through microscope. This reproduces immaterial nature through most material methods, showing ink painting translated through modern technology.
